Miss Z's story

Miss Z expressed her gratitude for the support she received from AmeriHealth Caritas DC, which not only boosted her health but also rekindled her hope for the future.

Miss Z's* life took a dramatic turn when she moved to the United States over four years ago from her native country, Ethiopia. She arrived with hopes of financial independence for herself and her daughter. Back in Ethiopia, she ran a nonprofit organization and was dedicated to funding her daughter's college education.

However, unforeseen circumstances soon took over Miss Z's life. She faced a significant loss of income due to the loss of donor funds for her nonprofit and suddenly became ill, resulting in multiple hospitalizations throughout the year. Her health struggles led to a loss of more income and housing, leaving her in a precarious situation.

Miss Z found herself living with friends. While she appreciated their support, her living situation presented challenges. Her illness meant she had to endure numerous medical appointments and constant shortness of breath. Her living arrangements imposed restrictions on her hosts, who couldn't cook their ethnic food for fear of aggravating her symptoms. Eventually, her host family set a deadline for her stay, and she found herself facing imminent homelessness.

Miss Z was soon identified by the AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia (DC) Utilization Management team for case management due to her many hospitalizations and complex health needs. She was eager to engage and receive assistance.

With the support of her discharge planner, Miss Z was connected with housing resources and moved into a temporary housing program with the hope of transitioning to permanent housing. Miss Z was later approved for permanent housing and news of her approval brought her immense joy and relief.

Miss Z's health improved significantly, with a noticeable reduction in her oxygen needs. She regained her physical capacity, even being able to take walks in her neighborhood without severe shortness of breath. Seeking help from case management assisted her path to securing Social Security Disability Insurance and connecting with a psychiatrist.
